Title: New Zealand; Air Force upgrades NH90 Helicopters
Deadline:
Country:
Description
New Zealand has achieved a global first in the field of military aviation. The RNZAF’s NH90 fleet has been fully upgraded with new software and equipment that now enables the helicopters to operate without restriction in the country’s controlled civil airspace. Initially planned as a three-year process in Europe, the entire upgrade was completed in just four weeks at RNZAF Base Ohakea, setting a new benchmark in fleet sustainment operations.
The NH90 is a multirole military helicopter developed by the NH Industries consortium (France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands) to meet NATO operational standards. It is available in two primary configurations: the TTH for land-based missions and the NFH for maritime operations. It features a carbon fibre fuselage, sliding side doors, a hydraulic rear ramp, and a four-blade composite main rotor. The helicopter can carry up to 20 troops, 12 stretchers, or 2,500 kg of cargo, including small armoured vehicles. Its onboard systems include FLIR, weather radar, a digital map generator, a helmet-mounted sight display (HMSD), and secure communication capabilities. Powered by either two Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca RTM322 or General Electric T700 turboshaft engines, the NH90 can cruise at 300 km/h with a maximum range of 982 km. The naval version can be armed with torpedoes, air-to-surface, or air-to-air missiles, while the land version can be equipped with a machine gun or 20 mm cannon.

Title: Belgium; MoD mulls acquiring 21 more F-35A jet fighters
Deadline:
Country:
Description
the Belgian government is preparing to finalize a strategic order for 21 additional F-35A fighter aircraft, bringing its total fleet to 55 units. This move is part of a broader €36 billion investment plan aimed at modernizing the country’s armed forces by 2035. Scheduled ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, the decision is intended to demonstrate Belgium’s commitment to meeting Alliance standards, particularly the target of allocating 2% of GDP to defense spending, amid growing geopolitical tensions with Russia.
The initial order of 34 F-35As, signed in 2018 to replace the aging F-16 fleet, now marks a full transition to a fifth-generation fighter capability. The F-35A is a multirole stealth aircraft with conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) capabilities, designed for missions such as air superiority, precision strikes, reconnaissance, close air support, and electronic warfare. It is powered by a Pratt & Whitney F135 engine producing up to 43,000 pounds of thrust, enabling speeds up to Mach 1.6 and altitudes exceeding 15,000 meters, with an operational range of 2,220 km. Its stealth design and integrated weapon systems allow it to operate in contested environments with reduced detection risk.

Title: Sweden; Navy orders air defense systems for its Visby corvettes
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Saab announced in 2021 that it had signed an agreement with Swedish defence procurement for the development of plans for a Visby upgrade. One aspect of the upgrade is for the introduction of a surface-to-air missile capability.
The Swedish Navy’s Visby-class corvettes are to be equipped with an anti-aircraft capability under a SEK1.6 billion (US$166 million) contract placed by the Swedish Defence Procurement Agency (FMV) with Saab.
The addition of the capability is part of a mid-life upgrade for the ships which are expected to remain in service until 2040.
The corvettes will thus be equipped with the ship-based air defence missile system Sea Ceptor and Common Anti-air Modular Missiles (CAMM) and in 2023 the FMV awarded a contract to MBDA for the supply of CAMM missiles.
The upgrade will be carried out at Saab in Karlskrona with a planned start in 2026. Saab's Kockums is the main contractor and the work is being carried out in cooperation with the suppliers MBDA UK and Lockheed Martin.

Title: Europe; PESCO to develop an anti-aircraft laser weapon
Deadline:
Country:
Description
Italy and Spain will be in charge of the European Directed Energy Systems (DES) project announced in the new wave (the sixth) of initiatives of the European Union's permanent structured cooperation tool (Pesco). This is one of the eleven new projects of this tool launched by the Council of the European Union agreed on 27 May, of which Spain participates in two. One contemplates the future obtaining of unmanned in-flight fueling aircraft, which will be developed together with Germany, and the one in question, led by Italy, pursues the obtaining of a modular and scalable directed energy weapon, which can be mounted on any mobile platform.
This is a new program. In other words, it does not derive from a previous one, as is the case in some of the 83 Pesco projects launched so far since the initiative started in December 2017. For example, among the new projects is one on surgical equipment, called MTF R2F CD, coordinated by France, which is the continuation of a previous one, known as ROLE 2F, launched two years ago and led by Spain. Now, by the way, Spain is no longer even among the countries involved in the MTF R2F CD, which are Belgium and Finland, in addition to the aforementioned France.
The DES that concerns us here seeks to "strengthen surface air and missile defense" (SBAMD), focusing particularly "on short-range air defense (Shorad) and very short-range air defense (VShorad) capabilities." This includes capabilities against unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) and against rockets, artillery and mortars (C-RAM).
Against drones, mortars and rockets
More in detail, its purpose is specified in five points. The first addresses the development of a system that can effectively counter threats from UAS, RAM, loitering munitions and cruise missiles.
The second element contemplated refers to "the integration of scalable high-energy laser technology (10-100 kW of power) in mobile platforms to counter various aerial threats".

Russia is testing a family of tungsten-based gun cartridges on the battlefield in Ukraine designed to destroy small drones.
The IGLA family of counter-drone cartridges consists of pellets made of a harder substance to inflict greater damage.

State conglomerate Rostec unveiled the IGLA cartridges in May at the MILEX 2025 defense exhibition in Minsk, Belarus. The family includes the IGLA 30, 50, 100, and Tracer 75 models.
The numbers indicate the ammunition’s effective ranges in meters.
